Home Move info 6 - 9 months

By now your planning will be well under way, but with 6-9 months to go you’ll still have time to deal with any unexpected issues that may arise.
Now is a perfect time to begin researching in more detail into the country you’re soon to call home.

With 6-9 months to go, we recommend that you:

  • Look into housing options in your new area. You might take into account proximity to schools if you have children, and if you are in contact with any current or former residents, talk to them about which locations suit your needs. Remember that Gosselin’s relocation specialists are more than happy to help you find the home and neighborhood which best match your desires.
  • If you have children, begin looking for a new school in your destination country: research admissions and registration requirements and whether there is a waiting list. You could consider looking for an international school with a standard program, especially if you may be moving again in future.
  • Decide what you’re going to take with you, and start making lists. Remember to consider customs restrictions for the country you’re going to, the size of your home on the other end, and shipping allowance if this is an employer-sponsored move.
  • If you’ve never been there before, consider organizing a pre-move visit to your new country so that you can come to a better understanding of the culture, lifestyle, housing and so on. This will help to ease the transition after your move, as the initial shock of the new will already be behind you.
  • Decide what to do with your house: whether you are going to sell it, lease it, or have a friend/relative move in if your move is not permanent. If you are renting, give your landlord as much notice as possible, and if you are selling, put your house on the market as soon as you can.
